PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES:
Risperidone is chemically unrelated to other antipsychotic agents. Risperidone is an atypical or second-generation antipsychotic agent. Risperidone is a selective monoaminergic antagonist with high affinity for the serotonin Type 2 (5HT2), dopamine Type 2 (D2), ?1 and ?2 adrenergic, and H1 histaminergic receptors. Risperidone acts as an antagonist at other receptors, but with lower potency. Antipsychotic action is attributable to blockage of D2-dopamine receptors in mesolymbic and mesocortical areas; antiemetic action is due to blockage of D2-dopamine receptors in trigger zone of emetic center, antipyretic action is mediated by blockage of D2-dopamine receptors in hypothalamus. Sedative action is secondary to the adrenergic blockage. Risperidone is indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia. Risperidon is indicated as monotherapy or as adjunctive therapy to lithium or valproate for the treatment of bipolar disorder. Risperidone is used for the management of irritability associated with autistic disorder.
